Heavily influenced by Def Leppard and Bon Jovi, Beggars & Thieves were among the countless pop-metal/hard rock hair bands that was formed on the East Coast in the late ‘80s. The New York outfit was never huge, although it has enjoyed a small following. Beggars & Thieves was formed in 1989, when lead singer Louie Merlino joined forces with guitarist Ronnie Mancuso, drummer Bobby Borg and bassist Phil Soussan (who had played with one of the post-Black Sabbath backup bands that Ozzy Osbourne had as a solo artist in the ‘80s). After their formation, Beggars & Thieves started playing around New York—and the band had only played six shows when it landed a deal with Atlantic. In 1989, Steve Thompson and Michael Barbiero were hired to produce Beggars & Thieves' self-titled debut album, which Atlantic released the following year. Many of the headbangers who heard that aggressive yet melodic CD agreed that Beggars & Thieves were hardly the most original or groundbreaking band in the world, but they also acknowledged that the New Yorkers' songs were hooky and infectious. After that album, Beggars & Thieves went through some personnel changes. Soussan and Borg left the band, and Mancuso and Barbiero decided to carry on without them. In 1991, a new three-person lineup was formed—one that consisted of Merlino on lead vocals, Mancuso on both bass and guitar and newcomer Bobby Chouinard on drums. And it was also in 1991 that Beggars & Thieves left Atlantic and signed with Epic. With that new Merlino/Thompson/Chouinard lineup, the band recorded its second album—which probably would have come out in 1991 or 1992 were it not for office politics. Unfortunately, Beggars & Thieves got caught in the corporate crossfire at Epic, which dropped the band without releasing that second album. Finding themselves without a record deal, Beggars & Thieves didn't record for any more major labels in the ‘90s. And when Nirvana, Pearl Jam and the grunge movement exploded commercially in 1992 and 1993, the majors lost interest in the type of pop-metal/hard rock that Beggars & Thieves specialized in. Instead of looking for the next Axl Rose (Guns N' Roses) or the next Vince Neil (Mötley Crüe), major label A&R people were looking for the next Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) or the next Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam). But despite the commercial decline of pop-metal and hair bands, Beggars & Thieves kept plugging away. Eventually, their second album—the one that Epic decided not to release—saw the light of day. In 1997, Beggars & Thieves' sophomore effort, Look What You Create, was finally released independently (although it had limited distribution). And in 1999, they recorded The Grey Album, another independent release.
In the '80s and '90s, Atlantic had an extremely busy A&R department. The major label signed artists left and right and released more CDs than many of their competitors. Unfortunately, putting out that many CDs meant that some artists were bound to fall through the cracks, and this self-titled debut album by Beggars & Thieves didn't do as well as it could have. The music on this 1990 release is melodic hard rock, pop-metal, and arena rock along the lines of Def Leppard and Bon Jovi. Beggars & Thieves doesn't get into fantasy metal à la Iron Maiden or Ronnie James Dio — they steer clear of gothic fantasy themes, opting for major pop appeal. Nothing groundbreaking occurs and the material is highly derivative. But derivative doesn't necessarily mean bad. While Beggars & Thieves will never be accused of being the least bit innovative or forward-thinking, their songs are generally catchy and enjoyable. Aggressive yet melodic tunes like "Waitin' for the Man" (not to be confused with the Velvet Underground/Lou Reed classic), "Isn't It Easy," and "Love's a Bitch" don't point hard rock in any new directions — that would be Nirvana and Pearl Jam's job in the early '90s — but they're still easy to like. And with the right promotion, this album probably would have received a lot more attention; in the pre-Nevermind world of 1990, this type of slick hard rock/pop-metal was still huge. Back then, Nirvana only had a small cult following and Pearl Jam's first album was still a year away. But again, this is a CD that wasn't as big as it could have been. Although not a masterpiece, Beggars & Thieves' decent, if conventional, debut is worth hearing if you're a die-hard fan of '80s-style pop-metal.
