VV.AA. - Bread and Roses Festival (1979 US)

-->The Bread and Roses Festival of Music Recorded October 5, 6, and 7, 1979.

-->The second Bread & Roses album was actually recorded at the third annual fundraiser festival. This one dropped the word "Acoustic" from the title, but it still has a folkie feel to it. Unlike the first B&R album, Mimi does sing on this one, duetting with Joan on her theme song "Bread and Roses." "Bread and Roses" was poem written by James Oppenheim in 1912. While attending a women's strike at a textile mill in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Oppenheim saw a banner that said, "Give us bread but give us roses." Struck by the remarkable imagery, he wrote the following poem: Bread and Roses
As we go marching, marching, in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray

Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,

For the people hear us singing:

Bread and Roses! Bread and Roses!

As we go marching, marching, we battle too for men,

For they are women's children and we mother them again.

Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes.

Hearts starve as well as bodies;

Give us bread but give us roses.

As we go marching, marching, unnumbered woman dead

Go crying through our singing their ancient call for bread.

Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew.

Yes, it is bread we fight for, but we fight for roses too!

As we go marching, marching, we bring the greater days.

The rising of the women means the rising of the race,

No more the drudge and idler, ten that toil where one reposes

But a sharing of life's glories:

Bread and roses! Bread and roses!

Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes.

Hearts starve as well as bodies.

Bread and roses! Bread and roses!

It was actually Joan who suggested the name "Bread and Roses" for the organization Mimi founded. A couple years later, Mimi set the poem to music for Judy Collins, who recorded the song for her 1976 album of the same name. It has since been recorded by many others using Mimi's arrangement (see the Cover Versions page for a list of recordings). For a discussion of the symbolism of bread and roses and its significance in the women's labor movement, see the article "Bread and Roses Across the Pacific," by Anne Learmonth, in Hecate, vol. 26, issue 2, 2000, p. 69-87.
