Muy buenas, queridos clientes de esta fábrica de galletas. Hoy toca cerrar el año, y lo vamos a hacer con el cuarto álbum de ISB. Tras los tres primeros trabajos, The Incredible String Band (1966), The 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion (1967) y The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter (1968), este mismo año 1968 aparece un álbum doble en UK y que curiosamente es dividido en dos en US (¡qué raro que los americanos cambien las ediciones!). Es un trabajo más tranquilo que los precedentes, más introspectivo, y en el que por primera vez Williamson y Heron intervienen en las canciones del otro, participando en arreglos y producción.
Además de los incombustibles y siempre presentes Robin Williamson y Mike Heron (aunque Williamson dejó la banda en 2003), en este disco componen la banda Christina "Licorice" McKechnie (percusión, arpa irlandesa y coros) y Rose Simpson (violín, percusión y coros). Las ventas en US fueron menores de lo esperado, quizá debido a la división del álbum.

Finalizamos AGOSTO-08. Añadidos dos atrasados: un magnífico bootleg de George Harrsion pendiente de diciembre-07 y Fluydos, gentileza de Yerma, del mes anterior.
Probablemente no es el mejor álbum de S&G (Bookends, obra maestra), pero entre sus otros trabajos no sabría con cual quedarme. Para mí hay dos temas absolutamente maravillosos "Scarborogh Fair/Canticle":
tema firmado por el dúo (cosa muy, muy rara) y "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her":
que os pongo en una versión absolutamente increíble... si lográis eliminar el ruido de fondo. Pero es que además tenemos otras 10 maravillas dentro de este álbum (os juro que no hay ninguna mala, ni siquiera regular), y para terminar, un par de bonus de la edición de 2001. Os añado también dentro del archivo las portadas de la edición original española, con distinta portada.
Algunos datos: en la versión inglesa no aparecía "Homeward Bound" (ni en la española tampoco). Esta canción fue el primer single, aparecido ocho meses antes que el LP (febrero y octubre del 66). El siguiente single, que precedió también al álbum en un mes, fue "The Danglig Conversation", canción que enamoraba a Paul y que la explicaba como una relación moribunda. Sin embargo, Garfunkel no la apreciaba demasiado, al considerarla muy pretenciosa. Tras estos dos temas, el siguiente single se distanció a febrero del 68 y fue "Scarborough Fair/Canticle". Como curiosidad, en The Graduate (BSO) aparece dos veces, la versión de aquí y otra de practicamente el doble de duración (realmente es la canción dos veces con un pequeño puente musical intermedio). La traducción del título del LP es "Perejil, Salvia, Romero y Tomillo" y es una de las estrofas de esta canción:

El álbum alcanzó el #4 en las listas americanas, el #13 en UK (pero tras su relanzamiento en agosto del 68) y el #14 en Australia. Todas las canciones van firmadas por Paul Simon, excepto "Scarborough Fair" (P. Simon-A. Garfunkel) y "7 O'Clock News/Silent Night", donde se combina el famoso villancico con varias noticias radiofónicas que poco tienen que ver con una "Noche de Paz" (la guerra de Vietnam, los movimientos por los derechos civiles y la muerte del comediante Lenny Bruce). "Patterns", "Flowers Never Bend With The Rainfall" y "A Simple Desultory Philippic" ya habían aparecido en el primer álbum de Paul, The Paul Simon Songbook, en unas versiones mucho más desnudas en cuanto a instrumentación... y sobre todo en cuanto a voces.
